Marcus Luttrell is a former Navy SEAL who served in Afghanistan. He survived a dangerous mission called Operation Red Wings in 2005, where he lost many of his teammates. The experience left him with deep emotional scars and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). When he returned home, he was given a therapy dog – a yellow Labrador puppy he named DASY. The name stood for the initials of his fallen teammates, making the dog a living memory of his brothers-in-arms.
DASY wasn’t just a pet. She helped Marcus heal, giving him comfort, routine, and hope during one of the darkest times of his life.
One night in 2009, two men shot and killed DASY outside Marcus’s home in Texas. It was a senseless act of cruelty. Marcus was heartbroken. In a moment filled with grief and anger, he chased the two men across several counties while calling 911. Thanks to his actions, the men were arrested and later punished.
Marcus later said that it was DASY who kept him alive, and her death almost pushed him over the edge. But instead of taking the law into his own hands, he made the hard but right choice to call the police.
