Today, we’re excited to talk with Rachel Kontometros, a loving dog mom from Raleigh, North Carolina, whose golden retriever Bodhi has quickly become a favorite on social media. Bodhi’s joyful personality, fluffy golden coat, and sweet nature have helped him win thousands of hearts online, but to Rachel, he’s much more than an internet star. He’s her best friend, her running buddy, her little shadow, and the one who brings light to her everyday life.
In this interview, Rachel shares how Bodhi came into her world, how he changed her life, and the special bond they’ve built since he was just a tiny puppy. Whether you’re a dog lover or simply someone who enjoys feel-good stories, you’ll enjoy getting to know this adorable duo.
Welcome to Dogopo, Rachel! For our readers who may be meeting you for the first time, can you please introduce yourself and tell us a little about Bodhi and where you both are based?
Hi, my name is Rachel Kontometros, and I live in Raleigh, North Carolina, with my golden retriever, Bodhi! Bodhi was born in June 2024, and I adopted him when he was just eight weeks old in August. He’s truly my best friend and brings so much joy to my life. Bodhi is super quirky, loves people, and is always full of energy. He gets so excited when he sees anyone on our walks, he practically yanks my arm off to go say hi! He’s also my shadow. If I’m sitting on the couch, he’s in my lap. If I’m cooking, he’s right next to me, just watching. I love how affectionate and loyal he is, and he really does make every day brighter.

How did Bodhi come into your life? What made you choose a Golden Retriever?
I’ve wanted a golden retriever since I was a little girl, but life never really allowed me to take on the responsibility until last year. I had been in college, then living in New York City, which made it impractical to have a dog. When I moved back to North Carolina, I knew it was finally time to adopt my best friend. I’ve always loved the Golden Retriever breed. They’re so friendly, have a beautiful golden coat, and are wonderful family dogs. I also love how great their temperament is. I used to collect golden retriever stuffed animals while I waited for the right time to get one. Additionally, I’m an avid runner, and I wanted a dog who could join me on my runs. While I thought a dog could offer some protection, Bodhi is such a sweetheart that I don’t think he could hurt a fly!
How has Bodhi changed your life, both online and offline? What has surprised you the most about becoming a dog mom?
Bodhi has brought so much joy to my life, both online and offline. Offline, he’s the first thing I think about when I wake up, and I love taking him on adventures to the beach, lake, or mountains here in North Carolina. He’s always so happy, and his energy is contagious. He makes me laugh every day, and I’m super grateful to be his mom.
Online, I’m amazed at how quickly Bodhi gained a following. I joke with my friends that I’ve been posting selfies for 10+ years, and then Bodhi became an influencer in just one! His online presence has taught me a lot about social media, from creating the right content for various brands to figuring out how to angle photos and write cute captions. The most surprising part about being a dog mom is how much time it takes whenever we go out. Bodhi gets stopped every few seconds by people wanting to pet him or ask about him. I love the amount of attention he gets, but if I take him anywhere with me I have to block off more time in my schedule!
Is there a special story or unforgettable moment when you realized Bodhi brought something magical into your life?
Bodhi has this incredible ability to pick up on my emotions. Whenever I’m feeling stressed or upset, he’ll come up to me, gently place his forehead on my stomach, and just stand there. It’s as if he knows exactly when I need comfort, and it’s truly special. We have such a unique bond, and I’ve never experienced anything like it before. He does the same with my friends when they’re feeling down. He just knows when someone needs emotional support, and that’s priceless.

Bodhi has gained a big following online, accidentally going viral! How do you feel about his growing popularity, and how do you balance being a dog mom and managing his social media?
I’m honestly still in shock at how popular he’s become! With his good looks and charming personality, I almost feel like he was destined for this. All he needed was someone to consistently post pictures of him, and people just fell in love with him. It’s been amazing to see the joy he brings to people online, and it really doesn’t feel like work. I love taking pictures of him, posting on social media, and just spending time together. It’s a lot of fun, and social media is something I’ve enjoyed doing for years. In a way, it’s a dream come true to be able to create content with my best friend, and I’m so thankful for it.
Golden Retrievers are known for their joyful personalities. What is the one thing about Bodhi’s personality that you absolutely adore?
I absolutely adore Bodhi’s enthusiasm. No matter what we’re doing—whether it’s going for a walk, playing fetch, or just sitting on the couch—he’s always so joyful and full of energy. His excitement is contagious, and he never fails to put a smile on my face. I also love how he’s so loving and kind to everyone, whether they’re people, kids, or other dogs. His happy-go-lucky personality is something I truly cherish.
What does a perfect day with Bodhi look like? Any favorite activities or routines you both never miss?
A perfect day with Bodhi starts with an early morning run, followed by breakfast, and then some playtime at the dog park. In the afternoon, we might take a trip to go hiking with friends, take a boat ride, or meet my sister Angela for a coffee and pup-cup! Bodhi loves being outdoors, and I love seeing him so happy and full of life. In the evenings, we usually play fetch, relax together on the couch, and Bodhi will settle right into my lap. It’s the quiet moments that really make the day special.

What message would you like to share with other pet parents or people who are thinking about getting a dog? Any advice from your own journey with Bodhi?
One piece of advice I’d love to share is that there’s never a “perfect” time to get a dog. I waited for so many years, always thinking I wasn’t ready, but once I adopted Bodhi, it felt like everything fell into place. I don’t think you’ll ever be fully prepared, but the love and joy a dog brings to your life are worth it. If you’re considering getting a dog, especially if you’re young, responsible, and have time to care for them, I say go for it! You never know…your dog might even become an internet sensation someday!
