A new study has revealed that golden retrievers and humans share common genetic foundations for several behaviours and emotional traits. The research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), was conducted by scientists at the University of Cambridge, who analysed the DNA of 1,300 golden retrievers and compared it with that of their owners.
What the Study Found
The researchers examined behavioural traits such as energy levels, fear of strangers, and aggression toward other dogs, then connected these behaviours to specific genes in the dogs’ DNA. They discovered that 12 of these genes are also linked to emotional and mental characteristics in humans, including intelligence, anxiety, and depression.
One of the key genes highlighted in the study is ROMO1.
- In golden retrievers, ROMO1 is associated with trainability, which is how quickly and easily a dog learns commands.
- In humans, the same gene is connected to intelligence and emotional sensitivity. This suggests a shared biological influence on mental processing and emotional reactions.
Another gene, PTPN1, was linked to aggression in golden retrievers.

Dr. Eleanor Raffan, who led the research, said the results were “striking” because they provide strong evidence that humans and golden retrievers share genetic roots for behaviour. She explained that many of the identified genes influence emotional states in both species, suggesting that some behavioural traits may have evolved over years of coevolution between humans and dogs.
The bond between humans and dogs is believed to have evolved over thousands of years, shaped by companionship, shared environments, and mutual dependence. This study provides scientific support for the idea that our deep emotional connection with dogs may extend beyond companionship. It may be written into our genes.
Behaviour Is More Than ‘Good’ or ‘Bad’
Enoch Alex, the first author of the study, explained that these findings show how important genetics are in shaping a dog’s behaviour. Some dogs may be born more sensitive or easily stressed because of their genetic makeup. If their experiences reinforce these sensitivities, the dogs may behave in ways often labelled as “bad behaviour,” when in reality they are simply distressed or overwhelmed.
This perspective may help dog owners better understand their pets’ needs and emotional responses. It also highlights the importance of gentle handling, positive training, and supportive environments for dogs predisposed to stress or anxiety.
The research deepens scientific understanding of dog behaviour and strengthens our appreciation of the long-standing bond between humans and dogs. As the findings suggest, we may share more with our furry friends than we imagined, right down to the level of our genes.
