A good boy has just made film history, and dog lovers everywhere have a new reason to celebrate.
Indy, the canine star of the horror film Good Boy, has won Best Performance in a Horror or Thriller at the Astra Film Awards 2026, becoming the first dog ever to win a major film acting award traditionally reserved for human performers.
The 9th Annual Astra Film Awards in Los Angeles delivered a moment that surprised and delighted the film industry. Indy, who plays himself in Good Boy, beat a formidable list of human nominees, including Ethan Hawke, Alison Brie, Sally Hawkins, and Sophie Thatcher.
Good Boy is no ordinary horror movie. Directed by Ben Leonberg, the film is told from the perspective of a dog navigating an unsettling and dangerous world. Indy, Leonberg’s real-life dog, appears in nearly every frame, reacting, observing, and emotionally guiding the audience through the story without a single spoken line.
That perspective is what made Indy’s performance stand out. The audience experiences fear, tension, and vulnerability through his expressions, body language, and eyes.
According to official records, Indy’s nomination alone was historic. He became the first canine nominated in a major acting category that had previously recognized only human talent. His win took that milestone even further.
Although Indy did not attend the ceremony, Leonberg accepted the award via a recorded video, with Indy sitting calmly by his side. In the video, Leonberg humorously noted that Indy was being recognized for “a movie he doesn’t understand he was in.”
What makes Indy’s win more remarkable is how his performance was created. Leonberg has explained that Indy does not rely on complex training or traditional acting techniques but knows only a handful of basic commands. His on-screen “performance” was captured by being patient, keeping the camera ready, and using everyday cues: sounds, gestures, food, and toys, to motivate him. The intense or frightening moments audiences see are often Indy eagerly focusing on a treat or a tennis ball just off-camera.
Through careful editing and the magic of filmmaking, those natural reactions became a deeply emotional performance. As Leonberg has said, the audience projects their own fear and empathy onto Indy’s expressive face, proof of how powerful animals can be on screen.
For dog lovers, Indy’s Astra Film Award win is more than a novelty. It is recognition of the emotional intelligence, presence, and connection that dogs bring not just to our lives but also to cinema.
Good Boy is currently available on video-on-demand platforms and is streaming on Shudder.
At Dogopo, we say it proudly: Indy didn’t just win an award, he proved that dogs don’t need lines to steal the spotlight.
