In the quiet village of Siyathi in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district, a pet dog is being hailed as a true hero. On the night of June 30, 2025, when deadly cloudbursts triggered flash floods and landslides across the region, this brave dog’s loud howling alerted villagers and saved more than 67 lives.
It was around 1:30 a.m., and heavy rain was pouring down across Mandi. Most people were asleep in their homes, unaware of the danger approaching. But one dog, sleeping on the second floor of a multi-storey house, sensed that something was wrong. He began barking and howling loudly, refusing to stop. His owner, Narender, woke up and went to check on him. That’s when he noticed a large crack in the wall with water gushing in.
Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Narender quickly raised an alarm. He rushed to wake his family and alert neighbours. The dog continued barking and even ran with villagers from house to house. Within minutes, over 60 people had run for safety, just in time. A landslide swept through the village shortly afterwards, destroying homes and reducing the area to rubble.
Sadly, the disaster claimed 15 lives and injured 5 others. Twenty-seven people are still missing, and search operations continue. The village of Siyathi was one of the worst-hit, with all 19 homes either swept away or heavily damaged. In total, the region lost over 1,100 homes and 780 livestock. Roads, power lines, and water supply systems were also badly affected.
However, amidst this tragedy, the story of the alert dog brings a ray of hope. His natural instinct and loyalty saved dozens of lives, proving once again why dogs are called man’s best friend.
This brave dog may not wear a cape, but in the eyes of Siyathi’s villagers, he is nothing less than a superhero. His actions shows us that sometimes the greatest heroes are the ones who walk on four legs – loyal, fearless, and always watching over us.
In moments of crisis, Rocky didn’t hesitate. He sensed danger, took action, and stayed by the villagers’ side until they were safe. His instincts, loyalty, and courage saved 67 lives, a feat that no technology or warning system could match that night.
Dogs like Rocky don’t just offer companionship; they offer protection, emotional support, and, as we saw in Mandi, even a chance at survival. Their love is unconditional, their loyalty unmatched, and their instincts often sharper than our own.
