Shohei Ohtani has added another highlight to his impressive career. The Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star has released a picture book in Japan about the adventures of his beloved dog, Decoy. The book came out on February 20 and has already received warm responses from fans.
The Japanese edition was published by Poplar Publishing Co. It’s a translation of the children’s book Decoy Saves Opening Day, which was published earlier in the United States. Ohtani collaborated on the story with storyteller and investor Michael Blank, and the illustrations were done by Fanny Liem.
In the story, Decoy has an important job. He’s picked to throw the ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day of the baseball season. Just when things seem perfect, Decoy realizes he forgot his lucky baseball at home. What follows is a fast-paced and charming adventure as he hurries back to get it, hoping to make it back in time for the big moment.
Ohtani shared on the publisher’s website that he feels happy to tell the story of why Decoy, known as Dekopin in Japan, is so special to him. The book offers a softer, more personal glimpse into the life of the baseball superstar, revealing a side of him that fans do not always see on the field.
Beyond entertainment, the project also carries a meaningful purpose. Poplar Publishing has announced that a portion of the book’s sales will be donated to animal welfare organizations. Ohtani himself has pledged to donate all of his earnings from the book to charity. He expressed hope that the story would bring joy to children and also encourage support for animal shelters, helping more dogs find loving homes.
With this heartfelt release, Ohtani shows his influence reaches far beyond baseball.
